Durham University was one of the first universities to commerce tuition in England and is one of a number of institutions that has been described as the third oldest university in England, following University of Oxford and University of Cambridge. It is in the top ten universities in England, and is ranked 4th to 6th in various types of university lists. It ranked 96th in the 2016-2017 Times World University Rankings. It has excellent reputation around England and even the world.
Durham University is one of the only three collegiate public research-based universities. Its main functions are divided between the academic departments of the university and 16 colleges. In the 2015 Complete University Guide, it was the only university whose all subjects ranked in top 10 in the UK, especially its English which ranked 1st. In the individual subject rankings, Durham was top 3 in the UK for Archaeology, Anthropology, French, Engineering, Geography, History, Iberian Languages, Italian, Theology & Religion Studies.
